Southern Heritage Classic
Fall is here and that could only mean one thing-- football season is here! The battle of the HBCUs, and the bands, kicks off with the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN. The 2012 Southern Heritage Classic, sponsored by FedEx, features the 23rd rivalry between Tennessee State and Jackson State University. The series between these two great schools began in 1990 with a Tennessee State 23-14 win. Since then, the battle for the crown has been a back and forth war. No, not a real war, but a friendly football game that gathers thousands of people from all over the country to celebrate this great tradition. The 2012 game takes place on Saturday, September 8th at 6pm at the Liberty Bowl, but there will also be two days of activities leading up to the big game. Starting on Friday, alumni and Memphians alike can laugh it up at the Comedy Jam featuring Comedian Rickey Smiley, groove at the R&B concert featuring The O'Jays, and stomp and shout at the Greek step show at LeMoyne-Owen College. Of course, college football would not be complete without tailgating on game day.
There are a host of other events, but I am particularly looking forward to the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals' fundraiser event- the De:Luxe Classic Affair- at the Luxe Penthouse starting at 9pm. The mission of MULYP is to promote the personal and professional development of young professionals in the Memphis area through social and community action, and this is sure to bring the young professionals out in full force. As a member, I am extremly excited to attend this event during classic weekend. If you love football and ready to have a good time, come out and have some fun. You can learn more information about the classic here at www.southernheritageclassic.com. So get out and get fresh!!
