In order to grow, you have to be open to new things. As you embark on new life journeys, it's good to remember where you came from. Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum exemplifies this theory by serving as president and CEO of The Soulsville Foundation, one of the most notable recording music studios in the world. Located in Memphis, TN, the Soulsville Foundation includes The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and the Soulsville Charter School.
Whalum grew up in the same South Memphis neighborhood and understands how important it is to give back to the community that raised him. While he has toured all over the world working with artists such as Whitney Houston, Al Green, and Kirk Franklin-- just to name a few-- he has dedicated a lot of his time to his own Memphis communities.
I was recently invited to attend Whalum's listening event at The Stax Museum for the release of his newest album "Romance Language." It is a smooth jazz album with arrangements such as "Lush Life" and "I Wanna Know" that showcase the talents of Kirk Whalum as an artist. What made this experience even greater was the chance to hear Whalum perform live songs from his album and he even did a tribute to the late Whitney Houston.
I had a awesome time and shared my appreciation with Whalum after his performance. There are many kind-hearted and humble people that make great contribution to the City of Memphis, and I commend Kirk Whalum for being one. "Working with the youth brings great joy," Whalum said. These same youth will become the next award winning musicians given the opportunity and proving that it is important to remember where you came from, but just like Whalum, even better to give back.
