While most of us enjoyed an extra day off for the weekend, others celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a little differently. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929. Dr. King became a civil rights activist early in his career and later became the leader of the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement refers to the movements across the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights to them between 1955-1968.
As a prominent figure in this movement, Dr. King led the Montgomery Bus boycott and the noted March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech established Dr. King as one of the greatest speakers in American history. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize along with numerous other awards, such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN, which since has been transformed into the National Civil Rights Museum. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a national holiday in 1986, and this year I took the opportunity to experience it for a whole weekend. I visited the museum and also participated in a round table discussion with civil rights leaders that discussed their Dr. King experiences. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that you should judge a person by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin. This vision has always inspired my lifestyle to become what it is today. As always, enjoy and stay FRESH !!!!
