Who's Next ?

In order to build a house, you must have a blueprint. If you want to be successful in life, you must have a plan. Just like in hip-hop, the game is always waiting on the "Next Big Thing." During my journeys as the Connoisseur of Fresh, I have explored this notable urban culture right here in Memphis,TN. The people, passion, and love for hip-hop lives in this city.

I recently attended the K97 "Next Big Thing 4" contest hosted by DJ Devin Steel, DJ Big Sue, DJ Mic Tee, and DJ Rocksteady. Quite possibly the biggest opportunity in the Mid-South for independent artist and producers, this year's contest allowed upcoming producers in the Mid-South to showcase their talents. Anyone could submit their best tracks online, but K97's radio experts selected the best of the best. Their top picks were subject to the votes of the community, who narrowed the field down to the top 10.

In a final battle, the top 10 producers were given two minutes to display their best work and judged by a panel of verterans in the game. This year's producer judges were Memphis's own Lil Lody, Don Trip, and Platinum producer Khao. There were also special guest apperances by Memphis artists Zed Zilla, Skewby, and the original "Next Big Thing" winner, Gyft. Memphis producer, Char Len, came out victorious, winning the title, a Mac Book Pro and a chance to produce with Don Trip.

In the words of Don Trip himself, "the artists need producers, just like the producers need artists." It's all part of the plan to be successful. Memphis has many talents and successful artist such as Yo Gotti, and I was able to attend his album release signing for his major label debut "Live from the Kitchen." Yo Gotti has definitely followed his blueprint, which has led him from his humble beginnings in North Memphis to his success with hit tracks such as "Harder" produced by Lil Lody. Contests like K97's "Next Big Thing" and artist such as Yo Gotti prove that hip-hop lives in Memphis. When opportunity knocks, there is no telling where the next big stop may lead. Who's next?
